 Unique Experiences Near Punta Cuna

Tired of seeing the same old tours? Searching for something a little different than the generic boat tour? Our 5 unique Dominican Republic experiences will help mix things up so you can get a real taste of this magical island.

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti to its west and is famous for its many tropical beaches, warm culture, deep history, and varied landscapes. Our suggestions listed below will transport you away from the crowds and hopefully provide you with a genuine insight into the area, the ecosystem coupled with its wildlife, and its people.

For things to do in Punta Cana with family and friends, read our suggestions below:

1. INDIGENOUS EYES ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

Situated south of Punta Cana Airport and inside the PuntaCana Resort & Club, this subtropical reserve is a great day out. Starting in the 1960s, this non-profit’s objective is to promote and educate visitors on climate change, sustainable practices, and to protect and preserve Punta Cana’s natural resources.

This gorgeous private reserve has a looping hiking trail through the impressively diverse forest with 12 turquoise lagoons — perfect for cooling off. On a guided tour (which you need to book on the website in advance), your local guide will point out the extensive variety of flora and fauna while you dive into the interesting history and culture of the area and learn about the Taínos, the Indigenous peoples and first visitors to the island.

2. LA RAMONA

La Ramona, a 250,000 strong town located on the Dominican coast, was once home to the Americas largest sugar cane mill before shifting the town’s focus to tourism in the 1970s. Visitors frequent Altos de Chavon, a re-created 16th-century Mediterranean village sprinkled with colorful murals and artist workshops, and arts & craft stalls. Various white sandy beaches dot the coastline with the beautiful Isla Catalina laying to the south and surrounding the town, the lush Cotubanama National Park attracts visitors with its intricate cave system, freshwater springs, and Taino rock art.

To explore this wonderful town with a local guide, come with us! We organize pick up and drop off from your accommodation in Punta Cana, show you the hidden gems only locals know about, dine on some local delicacies, and you’ll also learn how to roll your very own cigar. A cultural experience masterclass.

3. AQUAMUNDO SAMBIL SANTO DOMINGO

As a perfect family day out in the Dominican Republic, a visit to this aquarium is a fun experience for both you and your kids. With over 70 exhibits, there is an abundance of both aquatic animals and a reptile exhibit. This includes a shark tunnel, the opportunity to interact with koi fish and starfish as well as seeing some blue tongue lizards and bearded dragons. This is a great place to learn all about them!

As a slightly less ‘cultural’ experience, visiting the aquarium does have its benefits. They support and help fund local environmental projects like coastal cleanings, educational talks, activities for schools and camps, and wildlife conservation projects on land and in the ocean.

4. CHOCO MUSEO PUNTA CANA

A short distance from Playa Bavaro lies Punta Cana’s locally-owned chocolate factory and museum and it is a delight to visit. Not only is there delicious chocolate made from local beans available to purchase, but you can get hands-on and make your own in one of their workshops!

The Dominican Republic has a long history with chocolate and is known as the world’s tenth-largest cocoa producer. You’ll learn about this and so much more on their free museum tour. And, it goes without saying, try some of their chocolate, you won’t regret it.

5. CUEVA DE LAS MARAVILLAS

The Cave of Wonder National Park is a beautifully intricate system of underground caves steeped in history. The cave walls are packed with paintings and engravings drawn by the Taino Indians. Other attractions in the park include the artificial Water Mirror Gallery lake which provides a stunning reflecting view of the cave ceiling.
